We're all for DIY when it comes to tackling minor drain clogs. There are a few safe-to-use drain cleaning solutions that you can make with the contents of your pantry, however, we never recommend using harmful chemicals to clear stubborn clogs. These solutions are safe to use and will clear the less serious issues.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

The combination of the baking soda and vinegar does a great job of getting rid of bad smells and chemicals that have built up.

Pour ½ a cup of baking soda down the drain, and then a ¼ cup of vinegar thereafter. Leave this for about an hour and fill a pot with water. Boil the water and then pour it down the drain to rinse out the mixture. You may need to do this more than once to remove stubborn clogs and odors.

Borax, Salt & Vinegar

Baking soda and Borax are different, although they have a similar effect on effectively cleaning your drains.

Begin with ¼ cup of salt, then add a ¼ cup of Borax. Add a ½ cup of vinegar and then a pot of boiling water. After an hour, rinse the drain with hot water to remove the remains of the mixture down the drain.

Combine ½ a cup of baking soda, ½ a cup of salt and 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar. Place this mixture in a sealable jar or container and give it a good shake. Pour half the jar in the drain. Then, pour a pot of boiling water into the drain and leave the contents to work its magic. After an hour, rinse the drain to remove any solution that hasn't broken down.
